Members of the Red Cross Youth (RCY) of the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) launched their Pledge 25 by sponsoring a mass blood donation for one whole day at Quezon City Hall last Friday.
Red Cross Youth’s Pledge 25 Campaign is Red Cross Youth Department’s support of the drive on voluntary, non-remunerated blood donation campaign of the National Blood Service. It is a group of young blood givers motivated to become voluntary blood donors and will pledge to regularly donate blood 3 to 4 times a year starting the age of 18 until they reach 25.
According to Rona May Espino, the Chapter Service Representative of Red Cross Youth, this campaign is a revival of a similar project introduced in the late 1950’s by former Red Cross Youth Manager Alejandro Torres.
The members involved in this campaign most likely come from the College Red Cross Youth and the Community Red Cross Youth divisions of the Red Cross Youth. Majority of the blood donors were aged 21-25 years old.
Several schools from Quezon City were involved in Friday’s campaign. These schools were University of the Philippines-Diliman, Technological Institute of the Philippines, Philippine School of Business Administration, National College of Business Arts, FATIMA University, and World City College.
TThe Red Cross Youth is one of the six major services of the Philippine National Red Cross. Its mission is to educate and empower the children and youth in the spirit of Red Cross through constructive trainings and effective leadership, and provide opportunities for directing and harnessing their energy and idealism into worthwhile humanitarian activities.
There are four age classifications in Red Cross Youth. There is Junior Red Cross Youth (JRCY) for children seven to 12 years old. There is Senior Red Cross Youth for the high school students. College Red Cross Youth is for the college students, while Community Red Cross Youth is for the young professionals and community-based youth.
